In the world heritage city of Agra stands the splendid Red fort of Agra. At a distance of just two kilometers from the terrific Taj Mahal the fort is located right next to its gardens. It has the river Yamuna flowing on one side and is very near to the city railway station. The marvel of the Mughal architecture was built in the 17th century by the great emperor Akbar. The walls of the fort constructed in red sandstone enclose an area of two and a half kilometers. The fort is in true sense the treasure house of the Mughal architecture. Though it was the third Mughal emperor who had started with the construction of the fort it was later completed by Jehangir and Shahjahan. The two generations of rulers built an amazing array of buildings inside the fort. The most remarkable of the structures are palaces, the reception rooms and the marvelous mosques. The picture perfect palaces seem to come straight from the fairy tales have been built in red sandstone and white marble. Facing the river there was another array of buildings in the traditional style of Bengal and Gujarat. Today you will be able to spot only a few of the five hundred of them. It is noteworthy that Jehangir and Shahjahan who were wonder struck by the magical marble in white remade the structures in the red sandstone built by Akbar.
The significant Jehangiri Palace was the main zanana palace in the fort. It was built for the women of the royal household. It was the royal residence of the Rajput wives of Akbar. The palace is an instance of the fusion of the Transoxanian architecture with that of the Grjarat-Malwa-Rajasthan style. The former style is revealed in the thin though huge columns in verandah on the east. At the same time the latter style can be spotted in the courtyard halls with the marvelous motifs of flowers and the animal carvings.
The Khas Mahal palace is very well ventilated. It is special with the view of the angoori bagh and the river through the jail screens. Then there is the spectacular Sheesh mahal. The palace was used as the royal hamman or the bathing area. Till date it appears stupendous with the myriad glass pieces and the water fountain in the middle.
The most romantic of the structures inside the fort remains the Musamman Burj. Two of the most gorgeous Mughal quuens namely Nurjahan and Mumtaz mahal used to dwell in the very well decorated area. The pietra dura decoration here is sure to sweep you off your feet. It was here that shahjahan the creator of the Taj Mahal breathed last looking at his work when he was in capitivity of his son Aurangzeb.
