Established in 1459 by Rao Jodha, Jodhpur is an enchanting storehouse of historical monuments and fascinating tourist attractions. Rao Jodha was a descendant of the Rathore clan that traces its descent to the Hindu deity Lord Rama. A hermit advised Rao Jodha to establish his fort atop a barren hill on the edge of the Thar Desert.
Once Rao Jodha built the massive fort atop the Bhakurcheeria hill that dominates the center of the entire 'blue city' he called it the 'Chintamani qila' but the fort was later renamed as 'Mehrangarh Fort' i.e. one of the most frequented Jodhpur tourist destinations today.
The foundation of the new Jodhpur city as it exists today was laid by Maharaja Pratap Singhji and later Umaid Singhji contributed to the building of modern Jodhpur city.
The entire Jodhpur city may be segregated into four parts viz. Shastri Nagar, Ratanada, Sadarpur and New Jodhpur city.
